Re: How I got rid (I hope) of my mucocele

January 18, 2008 by sport1

I tried pretty much the same thing Yaker did. It went dormant for about a month and
then came back. So I kept popping it every 3 days for a couple of weeks and it went
dormant again - so far it has not returned for me.

Re: 99% Sure I Have A Mucocele... Very Concerned About Surgery.

I haven't been to this forum for awhile. I had a small mucucele that seemed somewhat superficial. I popped it several times and it kept coming back. But I was peristent and I popped it and it never came back (after two weeks of popping every 3 days). This may just be an odd case and I'm not a medical expert so I can't recommend this.

I'd like to know if a laser is always a less painful alternative?

Yodergoat. No one here can give you medical advice. You need to see the physician. The
best that I could say from my minimal experience as a layman is that to me it looks like a mucocele.

Best of luck - let us know.

Re: Does it get bigger if you drain it?

I think this varies among individual cases. Some people in this forum claim that they have lanced their
mucoceles and that they went away. Others claim that it didn't help. For me, I claim to have a
"superficial" mucocele - it is relatively small and is right on the surface. When I lance it sometimes it returns,
but sometimes it becomes dormant and disappears for a couple of months. I am willing to live with this and
so have not had surgery. Regardless, it's a good idea to have it looked at by a dentist or physician.

Best of luck to you VJ. I could understand your angst. You say it was diagnosed -what was
their best guess. To me, a non med professional it sounds like it grows too fast to be
a cancer??? Let us know what happens- we'd like to hear.

Re: would a mucocele ever go away on its own?

April 10, 2007 by sport1

I think some mucoceles are "superficial" and can become dormant for a time-
see http://www.emedicine.com/derm/topic648.htm . So in that sense they can "go away",
but obviously not being a physician I cannot say for certain. Just read this forum, some say
theirs have become latent while others say theirs' has never gone away or have enlarged.
It would be a good idea to see a qualified medical/dental expert.

Wow- didn't sound like a pleasant experience, but it also sounded like it was a large one "yup, its a mucocele. and its a pretty good size" . I hope your recovery goes well. This kind of experience makes me more inclined
to get mine removed by laser if I decide to get surgery.

More follow-up: My mucocele has now gone into a latency phase. I haven't
had a problem with it for about 1 month (fingers crossed for luck). So for
now, no surgery for me. I still believe that some mucoceles are rather superficial and come and go and have a chance at going away or becoming dormant for long periods. I did see my dentist for a cleaning, but had nothing to show him.

You might also consider having it out with a laser.

Re: What is it

TeeZee, to me this seems like it may not be a mucocele. i would associate a mucocele with
salivary glands inside the mouth. However, I am NOT a physician and you need a true medical
opinion to see if a mucocele can grow from inside the lip to the outside. Could you call/write the surgeon who removed it the first time, and did he subject the tissue he/she removed to a path/histology analysis??? Best of luck.

Could you clearify please. It sounds like this lesion is not in your mouth but
"outside" your lip (on your face)-- is that correct??

Re: Confused

To follow up, I'm still unsure if I want surgery. The frequency has been variable- from as little as 2 days
between appearances of the vesicle to about 1 week (recent which has me optimistic). I have been popping
it and after about 1 day it's hard to tell it was even there. On one website someone said that there were
"superficial" mucoceles which is my best guess of what I have. I have an apt with my dentist in about 2 weeks
for a cleaning anyway so I'll discuss it with him then. (He's never seen it since when I was going to show him
it went down).

Alot of posters note that mucoceles tend to get filled with
liquid (and can be lanced) and is not the same color as the
surrounding tissue -so in that respect it doesn't sound
like a mucocele. Best bet is to get it looked at. I have lots
of lumpy tissue in my lip too so it may not be anything??

Good luck

Thanks for your reply and for providing this web site. I think I'll do a little
literature search at pubMed. :O

To follow up, the mucocele went away and I canceled my dentist appt. (nothing to see). However,
about a week later, it reappeared and rather than pop it, I decided to leave it alone and
see the dentist the next day. But that day it got a bit larger and popped when i brushed
my teeth (I didn't think I touched it as it's on my lower lip). Also my dentist turned out
to be away this week anyhow. This seems somewhat on the surface if it pops
relatively easily. I wonder if therees a way to prevent it from getting worse?

Confused

January 18, 2007 by sport1

Hi
I recently developed what I think is a mucocele on my lower lip (about 2 weeks). I had a vesicle with liquid in it and broke it open only to have it come back. I broke it open again (yes I shouldn't have
used my fingernails). It's more comfortable after it's lanced, but it now has some white tissue
where the vesicle was and feels a bit irritated. It's not that large (only 2-3mm)-yet. I see my
dentist in 2 days, but have discussed this by phone and he's fairly confident it's a mucocele.

My question: I notice some posts say that these mucoceles almost never get better without
surgury, yet I see several posters here refer to their cases in which they did get better. Further
I noticed that some poster even said that their physicians even said that they sometimes get
better. SO-which is it : Can they get better without surgury or not?????

Thanks
